Staying on the ground: the ground dwellers
We call bottom dwellers those aquarium fish that mainly stay in the lower area of the tank and live substrate-based. In most cases, the type of substrate plays an important role: it is better to avoid sharp-edged surfaces and to use sand, fine gravel or active soil. In this way, the foraging species in particular do not run the risk of injuring themselves, because in search of food, these fish dig through the bottom with their snouts. Depending on the species, however, large, rounded stones can also correspond to the conditions in the natural habitat, for example in the case of Reticulated Hillstream Loaches (Sewellia lineolata), which are native to waters with strong currents. Classic bottom dwellers include armored catfish of the genera Corydoras and Aspidoras as well as many other catfish and loaches, but some free-swimming fish such as Dario dario also belong to this category, as they mainly stay near the bottom.
