Product description & details

The Hovering Zebra Loach, Micronemacheilus cruciatus (formerly Yunnanilus cruciatus), comes from Vietnam in Southeast Asia and belongs to the stream loach family. It is found primarily in rivers and streams with low currents, as well as in lakes and ponds. The Hovering Zebra Loach, which grows up to 4cm in length, is characterized by its eponymous, vertical black stripes, which adorn the entire body and form a beautiful contrast to the silvery to golden base color.

Care in the aquarium

The dwarf loach, which likes to swim, needs an aquarium with a capacity of at least 60 or, better, 80 liters. The water temperature should be between 20 and 26°C and the water should be soft to medium hard. The somewhat shy animal feels most comfortable in groups, which is why at least 8-10 members of its species should be kept together. Dense border plants and other hiding places, dimmed lighting and a dark substrate also contribute to the well-being of the Hovering Zebra Loach. This extremely peaceful fish can easily be socialized with other peaceful, similar large fish.

Feeding

Since the Hovering Zebra Loach is an omnivore, feeding it in the aquarium is not too difficult. It is best to feed as variedly as possible. Frozen and live food are happily accepted, but commercial fish food and green food are also eaten.

Sexual characteristics and breeding

The genders of Micronemacheilus cruciatus can be identified by their body structure. The males are slightly slimmer and smaller, while the slightly fuller females grow a little bit larger. It is possible to breed these loaches in aquariums, but we don’t know much about it.

Carefully take the fish out of the bag/transport container and place them, along with the transport water, in a bucket or other deep, sufficiently large container. Give the animals time to get used to the room temperature, especially in winter. If the transport water is at room temperature, the water from the aquarium into which the animals are to be relocated can be added dropwise. Do this until the amount of aquarium water is at least equal to the amount of transport water. An air hose, in which you can tie a knot in order to slow down the water flow significantly, is suitable for adding the aquarium water. Water addition is even easier with the “Smart Move Acclimation Kit”, which allows you to adjust the flow rate as needed.
The acclimatization phase should last around 2 to 5 hours – depending on how different the water values of the target pool are from the transport water.
