Product description & details

The Guppy originally comes from South America and is one of the most popular aquarium fish today. There are now countless cultivated forms. In our Guppy Female Mix there are females of different colors. A silver to yellow body and brightly colored fins in a wide variety of colors characterize these animals.

Care

Due to its adaptability to a wide range of water parameters and uncomplicated keeping, the Guppy is also well suited for beginners. Poecilia reticulata needs an aquarium volume of at least 60 liters or an edge length of at least 60 cm as well as dense planting around the edges, roots or stone structures in order to be able to withdraw if necessary. There should still be enough free swimming space for this lively fish and the water current should not be too strong. This animal should not be socialized with closely related fish, since it can often lead to deformities in the offspring. If males and females are kept mixed, care should be taken to ensure that the number of females exceeds that of males, as the male animals often harass the females and this can often lead to stressful situations.

Feeding

As an omnivore, the Guppy willingly takes all conventional fish food of the appropriate size, as well as small frozen and live food.

Sexual characteristics and breeding

The Guppy females are easily distinguishable from their male counterparts due to their longer body length, their rounder physique and the far more subtle coloring, which is mostly silvery-grey to yellowish. Reproduction of the guppies is also very easy in the aquarium. Guppies are viviparous fish, so they don’t lay eggs but give birth to fully developed young. This very prolific fish – which is not called “million fish” for nothing – can produce around 20 young every 30 – 40 days.

Carefully take the fish out of the bag/transport container and place them, along with the transport water, in a bucket or other deep, sufficiently large container. Give the animals time to get used to the room temperature, especially in winter. If the transport water is at room temperature, the water from the aquarium into which the animals are to be relocated can be added dropwise. Do this until the amount of aquarium water is at least equal to the amount of transport water. An air hose, in which you can tie a knot in order to slow down the water flow significantly, is suitable for adding the aquarium water. Water addition is even easier with the “Smart Move Acclimation Kit”, which allows you to adjust the flow rate as needed.
The acclimatization phase should last around 2 to 5 hours – depending on how different the water values of the target pool are from the transport water.
